New Climate Change Campaign

The United Nations Environment Programme has just launched a youth network on climate change that you should be a part of! The aim of the Kick the Carbon Habit Education Campaign (KCHEC) is to empower and educate youth and the general public on concrete ways they can reduce their carbon footprint and address climate change. The campaign will be led by university and high school students who will use educational events to reach out to their communities as an on-going effort to educate the public about methods of conservation in a world where natural resources are becoming increasingly scarce.

Three audiences will be specifically targeted with this campaign: children ages 8-14, youth ages 14-22, and the general community, with the younger audiences a particular priority. University and high school students will engage these audiences in events such as a resource conservation fair at an elementary school or handing out eco-friendly bulbs to homeowners around a university campus. The unique nature of this campaign targets already-existing student groups. Because the campaign is based on individual events, student groups can host as many as their capacity allows, with a minimum of three per school year (August – June). The flexibility of the educational events means that the campaign will augment, not replace, existing environmental efforts.

This network has 20 youth from various corners of the U.S. and Canada who were selected to lead the Campaign for the 2008-2009 school year. These youth representatives are responsible for recruitment of university and high school students, and are there to serve as a resource to those campaign Ground Teams. They are responsible for distributing the campaign “start-up kit” – a compilation of resources that will assist students in planning events, teaching about resource conservation, and working with their communities – to interested Ground Teams. Additionally, they have been trained to serve as liaisons for the campaign, as well as assist any local campaign in its endeavors.

The backbone of this campaign rests in the Ground Teams, who launch this campaign on their campuses and in their respective communities, by hosting events targeting the three specified audiences. They will be local leaders of the campaign and implement its mission by tailoring the events and informational focus according to their communities needs and existing efforts.

Ground Team Responsibilities
• Host events educating the public about energy conservation and reducing your carbon footprint
• Based on the capacity of the student group, host at least 3 events per year
• Target the specified audiences, especially elementary and middle school students
